Through a methodical and painstaking process of layering petals of fine clay, Adelaide-based artist Ellis Moseley creates sleek, airy vessels that appear to float where they sit. Using paper-clay engobe – a fine-grained, lightweight and durable ceramic medium made from a mixture of clay engobe with fibers – the sculptures are composed of strips dried on a batter of plaster. The individual pieces are then peeled off and applied to a smooth base. It starts at the bottom and works in a loose spiral, maintaining delicate edges and emphasizing the contours of each vessel.
In his recent exhibition Heist at the Hugo Michell Gallery, Moseley focused on a color palette of pastel pinks, blues and greens, combining fine art with functionality. Find more of his casting work on his website.
