In dreamers, Andrew McIntosh simultaneously conveys the plight and resilience of small businesses, rendering isolated shops and inns among desolate landscapes. The (previously) Scottish artist often draws on nostalgia and oblivion, and is known for using the highlands of his childhood as a backdrop for his mysterious scenes in oil paint.
This new body of work, on view this month at the James Freeman Gallery, pits the inhospitable landscape against the needs of commerce with a heavy dose of irony. A travel agency towers over a small island requiring a boat trip to reach it, a tanning salon gleams amid a misty forest, and a lawn mower repair shop sits amid an overgrown field. vegetation. Often outfitting the buildings with peeling paint, neon signs and graffiti, McIntosh positions each as a relic of an earlier era, positing that, just as romantic notions of an untamed wilderness going out of fashion, “the ‘post-war idealism’ of capitalism and enterprise.
If you are in London, stop by the gallery to see dreamers from May 18 to June 10. Otherwise, find more on Instagram.
