STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Truckmaker Scania and battery producer Northvolt said on Tuesday it had developed an electric battery with a lifespan equivalent to that of a truck.

The Swedish companies said the lithium-ion cell in tests demonstrated a lifetime capacity to power trucks for 1.5 million kilometers (930,000 miles) – the same as the expected duration of a Scania truck.

“The future of heavy haulage is electric, and to enable change and continue to deliver on our brand promise to customers to be premium, Scania needs the best performing battery cells for our electric trucks,” Scania CEO Christian Levin said in a statement.

The battery cells are produced at the Northvolt Ett gigafactory in the north and the cell’s estimated carbon footprint at full series production is around a third of that of an industry benchmark, the figures said. companies.
