In mid-March, workers began pumping water from a 3.5-kilometer-deep hole drilled in the middle of a Nebraska cornfield. It would have been an ordinary scene if they had been looking for oil or natural gas. But the well is the first in the world drilled in search of natural hydrogen, which some say could become an important source of clean fuel.
